A perfect time in Wellington
In January 2008, I spent four weeks in Wellington and attended an IELTS preparation course at The Campbell Institute. I really enjoyed my time there so much – it was almost perfect!
Wellington is quite a small city and it is very cute. You can walk everywhere by foot or just take one of the many buses and there are many activities you can do in and around the city center.
Moreover, the best is that most of the museums and open-air concerts are free! Also the nightlife is great in Wellington. You have lots of small bars and cool nightclubs on Courtenay Place and Cuba Street, so you can have a pretty
good time there.
Maybe the only negative point about it is the changeable weather; sometimes it is quite rainy and cloudy. However, I was quite lucky and we had a lot of sunshine and a temperature around 25-29 C. So I guess the best time to go there is in January / February, you’ll definitely see the sun more often than in Europe at that time 😉
It’s not only the city but much more the people who made my stay very pleasant! That was a very cool thing about the Campbell Institute: You get to know so many people in a very short time.
I made many friends from all over the world and I’m still in contact with some of them. The school itself is located directly in the city center, so you can easily have a meal in the afternoon break and go shopping or visit some attractions after class.
The teachers are highly qualified and very nice personalities, like all the staff at Campbell. They know everybody by their name, which surprised me because there are many students and there is some fluctuation every week. The IELTS preparation class was quite challenging and had a very high level, so it prepared me perfectly to obtain a very good result in the exam. The school also offers many activities after class or in the weekend, which makes it easy to explore the city and get to know new people.
I stayed at a homestay family in Hataitai and enjoyed that very much. They were very nice people and helped me whenever I had a question. Two other students stayed with them and they often took us with them when they went out. That was perfect for learning English and some things about the Kiwi culture!
In conclusion, I had the best time in my life during my stay and I’d recommend everyone considering to do a language course in New Zealand to go to The Campbell Institute in Wellington — you won’t be disappointed! However, four weeks is a bit short, so I’d suggest staying around 3 months and travelling through this wonderful country if you have enough time!
Philipp passed his IELTS exam with an overall of 8.0 points out of 9.0. We
congratulate Philipp for this amazing result and say thanks for his
contribution to the school.
